REGULARLY BRUSHING YOUR DOG’S HAIR

062Regularly Brushing Your Dog’s Hair

Regardless of the length of your dog’s coat, regularly brushing his hair is needed. Brushing a dog’s hair removes any dead hairs, distributes natural oils resulting in a healthy and clean coat, gets rid of dry and dead skin, stimulates the skin’s surface. It also helps you bond with your dog as you become familiar with his body so you would be more aware of any changes. If you happen to spot any changes or trouble spots, let your dog groomer know about it. At It’s A Dog’s Life Spaw, we take a lot of pride in getting your pet’s coat just right. How Frequently Should I Brush My Dog’s Coat?

Regardless of the length of your dog’s coat, you should brush his or her hair every couple of days. While sometimes you may brush your dog’s hair for a specific purpose, such as helping speed up the shed of a seasonal coat or cleaning out matted hair, more often than not you are just going to be doing a general combing or brushing of your dog’s hair.

Getting Started Brushing Your Dog’s Hair

There are multiple kinds of pet combs and brushes available. There are general use brushes as well as those with specific uses. General tools available include the “Zoom Groom”, pin-head brushes and combs. Universal slicker brushes or shedding blades are ideal for getting hair mats out and removing dead coats of hair, but they aren’t recommended for just regular brushing.
If you want to make fringe hair look fluffy, finishing slicker brushes are perfect. However, these brushes are not strong enough for general brushing of your dog’s hair. Consider what you want to accomplish when brushing your dog’s hair, so you can select the best tools for the job.

Puppy Time!

Puppies may not like being brushed, or they may try to chew on the bristles initially. You need to show them the brush, letting them see it and then smell it. You can get started brushing them as you reward them with praise and treats. You have to adhere to short sessions initially, then increase the length of the brushing process as the puppy starts to enjoy the regular sessions. You can make the process a fun and bonding time for both of you.
With the right tools and the right preparation, you and your dog will look forward to routine hair brushing sessions. Take the time to educate yourself about the different tools and what works to take care of your dog’s hair. If you have questions, feel free to ask. We can be reached at (855) 774-SPAW (7729).
